Oxford North Science Park

I was commissioned via the London Contemporary Art Society to create six pen and ink drawings for a new science park being built by St John's college, Oxford.  Three of the drawings were to be acid-etched onto copper for external public signage/information boards.  The other three drawings were for each of the three main buildings.  They are for large wall displays in reception areas and stairwells.  The main red building features an Oxeye daisy with Bufftailed bumblebee; one grey building has Hazel with dormice, and the third building features Blackthorn with Black hairstreak butterflies.

Commissioned to create internal and external art work

English oak - Quercus Robur

EXTERNAL COPPER PLAQUE

A sketch, then a detailed pen and ink drawing.  Detail had to be kept very basic due to the acid etching process

Yarrow - Achillea millefolium

EXTERNAL COPPER PLAQUE

The challenge with this drawing was to depict the tiny details of the whole plant with the demands of the manufacturing process

Dormouse - Muscardinus avellanarius

DETAIL FROM INTERNAL SIGNAGE

Detail from the hazel drawing.  I chose the dormouse as it is native to Britain, and a threatened species

Yellow flag iris - Iris pseudacorus

EXTERNAL COPPER PLAQUE

All the plants were drawn from live specimens, studied on Boars Hill, Oxford

Dormouse - Muscardinus avellanarius

DETAIL FROM INTERNAL SIGNAGE

The client chose Hazel for one building as it is included in the new woodland area planting.  Dormice have been recorded in Oxfordshire, but require  an increase in suitable habitat to flourish.
